Agreement for the development of the Electronic Label

The Company Prodimar of Galician origin, supported by the Plan Galego of I+D+i, signed a contract with the Companies Nemoptic and Wairbut for the production of electronic labels with providers from the Industry of distribution.

A Coruna, December 2006 - Prodimar, a company from A Coruna of electronic engineering, which provides all kind of products and services within the industrial like textiles, metals, nutrition, woods, docklands services, logistic, distribution and transport, among others, has announced a contract for the electronic integration of electronic labels based on the bistable technology.

In accordance with this contract, Nemoptic (French company) which manufactures screens e-paper for portable equipment for the consumer and for professionals, will produce 40,000 units for which Prodimar will design and apply the electronic, and Wairbut, Company of relevance in the field of technological outsourcing, will effect the final integration of the product to another world leading company, which name has not yet been revealed, within the third quarter of 2007.

This effort of collaboration represents the first production of great volume of electronic labels 'e-paper' outside Asia and it shows the advantages of the technology specially designed taking into consideration price and efficiency. The whole price of the agreement has not been revealed.

The electronic labels (ESL) are price labels equipped with wireless capabilities which simultaneously transmit prices and information of promotions throughout the supermarket. The selection of this type of labels (series BM100: 3 inches, 64 x 240 pixels) respond to their competitive advantages in terms of contrast, autonomy and cost saving.

''The bistable labels allow an excellent 'reading' for the clients who consult the details of the products, allow textual information, barcodes and the prices of the products and promotions, without energy consumption between actualisations'' Observes Javier Marque, Director of Prodimar. ''This solution permits a huge improvement compared to the electronic technological solutions of liquid crystal screens (LCD) and they are cheaper''.

The inclination to replace the paper labels with ESL constitutes an excellent opportunity for this development according to the market information (Strong: Price Annual Report 2005). According to this report, is estimated there are about 53 million units installed on about 4,300 shops. Although the introduction is still low, this information puts the total of the available market as 6 - 10 thousand million units, only within the food provision industry.

The different studies indicate an increasing tendency for the shops to make automatic the process of price changing, because it has as a result a more satisfied clientele. A better administration of promotions which change constantly and the precise adjustment of prices requires a change of segments of screen, which only show prices, to a matrix of points which shows the price, name of the product and barcode. The bistable technology can permit more than 3 years of autonomy of the electronic label, because different to other technologies, only consumes energy while the information is being changed, not requiring power between actualisations.

BiNem (Bistable Nematic), is a revolutionary technology which improves the LCD technology with an effect 'memory' and a superior image quality. The Company Nemoptic achieves this by using materials of liquid crystal, which are standard, strong and affordable.
